63-82 NOS ASSEMBLY RIVETS These have all the correct features: Large 1/2" diameter flat head, 1/16" thick with concentric growth rings on the under side of the head only - not on top. They are the correct tempered hardness Aluminum, which easily peens over without using excessive force. This softness allows the 5/8" long shaft to be shortened to any length required. Cut with the wire cutters on most needle nose pliers. During assembly over 200 were used on body. Limited supply available. NOT REPRODUCTIONS. |
Since these are dead soft Aluminum EXACTLY like original - you can easily cut them with the wire cutters found on most needle nose pliars. | ||
Two methods using the 63-82 chart at the right. 1) Find the OEM part number in the factory assembly manual and then look it up in the cart at the right. Then trim the shaft to the appropriate length - or - 2) Measure the grip range of the parts beings assembled and find that range in the chart. Then trim the shaft to the appropriate length. |

A rivet grips or functions by the shaft expanding in an appropriately sized hole. If the rivet hole is to large, the bond will be weak. The peening over causes the shaft to expand in the hole. This flattening is not the primary source of the bond strength. The flat head of the rivet is always placed on the side opposite of the parts being assembled to the fiberglass. The rivet shaft then protruded through the hole in the part being attached. Correct shaft length is also essential to developing bond strength. See the above chart to determine shaft length. Peening rivets factory style requires power tools not available nor necessary for the hobbyist. A cardinal rule to follow when peening a rivet is to hammer on flat head of the rivet while an assistant with a much larger mass presses against the shaft end. If hammering on the shaft end, it will tend to push the rivet out of the hole. This method of applying force to the head was confirmed by many National Camel Rider Society members that experienced with professional riveters. Practice on scrap to become skilled before you damage any fiberglass. | ||
Brand X: is extremely hard and therefore very difficuult to
peen over without damaging the fiberglass. Brand Y: has visible concentric rings on top of the head instead of the original smooth top - dead give away. | ||
